Nuancing Young Masculinities: A study of Helsinki 12-15-year-olds

Ann Phoenix and Marja Peltola are the authors of the book "Nuancing Young Masculinities: Helsinki Boys' Intersectional Relationships in New Times" on which the seminar is based.

Abstract
A casual reading of the growing number of publications on boys and masculinities can be puzzling. Some popular texts blame masculinity for the litany of problems they document and suggest that boys pose particular difficulties for education, relationships, and behaviour. Others argue that such views are outdated, and that masculinity has shifted to a new, more ‘inclusive’ and softer version. This talk argues that these contradictory ways of viewing young masculinities are over simplistic. It draws on a study of Finnish young people (mostly boys) talking together in groups and interviewed alone to make this case. The young people’s narratives illuminate the ways in which young masculinities are nuanced, rather than one-dimensional or polarised. The young people (of all genders and mixed social class and ethnicities) tell stories  of relations with peers, parents and teachers that give insights into boys’ experiences and practices at school, home and in their leisure time. They illuminate the plurality of masculinities, their dynamism and intersections with other social identities.
