Situational Analysis: Mapping Complex Research Contexts

Maria Emmelin is Professor Emerita in Global Health at Lund University. She has extensive experience teaching qualitative methodologies at Master’s and PhD levels, including Situational Analysis, as well as publishing qualitative research findings.
Ann Öhman is Professor Emerita in Gender Studies at Umeå University. She has extensive experience teaching qualitative methodologies and publishing qualitative research findings on gender and public health.

In this seminar, Maria Emmelin and Ann Öhman will give an overview of Situational Analysis, a qualitative methodology developed by Adele Clarke (2005, 2015) as an extension of Grounded Theory. They will present examples from their own research to illustrate the use of Situational Maps, Social World/Arena Maps, and Positional
Maps, which are key analytical strategies within Situational Analysis.
Working with such maps helps researchers move beyond individual-level data from informants to include the broader context and complexity of the situation under study.
