Norms and stereotypes affect and limit all of us. They limit our imagination as to what a person with a certain gender, ethnicity, belief etc., is, can be and what expectations we have of them. By defying these norms, we can widen our imagination and create a more inclusive and varied way of seeing people. A way of challenging norms and stereotypes is working with images and showing a person out of their normative setting, like showing a man in a feminine pose.

The Gender Photographer works with just that, broadening our way of portraying people through photography. But what happens when we challenge norms? And can we change or erase stereotypes? Join us for a Sweden Talk on the consequences of norms and stereotypes and how we can work against them for a more inclusive and equal society.

Tomas Gunnarsson is a journalist, photographer and gender expert. Since 2011 he has held hundreds of lectures and workshops for companies, organisations and governmental institutions in Sweden and all over the world. His photo exhibition and guide book Images that change the world: a guide to equal communication, created in collaboration with the City of Gävle and the Swedish Institute, has recently been shown in China, Croatia, Italy, Latvia, Mexico and Russia.
