Artificial intelligence is often presented as a solution to complex societal challenges. At the same time, AI raises important questions about ethics, power, knowledge, and participation, particularly in Arctic contexts, where climate change, Indigenous rights, and local conditions are central concerns.
The AI and the Arctic theme meeting is an open invitation to anyone interested in exploring how AI can contribute to Arctic research and societal development, in dialogue with local communities and Indigenous peoples, and with a focus on a range of Arctic‑relevant questions where AI may play a role.
The theme brings together perspectives from multiple disciplines and has a particular focus on:
AI literacy and participation in Arctic communities
Collaboration with Indigenous peoples and local communities based on jointly formulated questions
Connections between AI, climate change, and sustainable adaptation
Revitalisation of languages and cultures in the Arctic
Using AI to support rural health, both by finding out what are effective ways to improve remote healthcare as well as investigating the need for new AI based technology;
Welcome!
The meeting aims to stimulate new interdisciplinary research collaborations, develop joint projects, and lay the groundwork for future funding applications and educational initiatives in AI and Arctic research. This includes workshops, research exchanges, and the development of courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
