UmU's Mathematics Cinema is showing The Bit Player - a film about Claude Shannon.

There will be a brief introduction to the film, and we will serve snacks.

Claude Shannon is probably best known as the father of information theory.

Information theory sets the theoretical foundations for the formal treatment of digital information: quantification, communication and storage.

He also liked juggling and artificial intelligence - he didn't have ordinary mice in his house, his mice were maze solving robot mice!

For people who care about counting citations, his 1948 paper "A mathematical theory of communication" has over 140 000 citations.

Support us and show up - if attendence is high our Mathematics Cinema will be a returning event with films about other important mathematicians.

This event is organised by the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics. All staff and students at UmU are most welcome.
