Time geography: Charting health through time and place

An introduction will be held by Karin Örmon, followed by discussions among participants.
Karin Örmon is an Associate Professor in Nursing currently at the Blekinge Institute of Technology, and from mid-August 2026 at Kristianstad University. She is also
Head of Research at the Västra Götaland Region Competence Centre on Intimate Partner Violence in Gothenburg. Her research focuses on intimate partner violence, intimate partner homicide, women’s health, and trauma-informed practices in health and social care. It adopts a qualitative and interdisciplinary approach, with
the overall aim of strengthening professional responses and improving outcomes for individuals exposed to violence.
Another area of her research is time geography. A central methodological component of this approach is the time-geographical life chart, in which an individual’s life is visualized along a timeline in relation to geographical movements and significant life events. The life chart is developed collaboratively with participants, using geographical relocations as anchors to structure autobiographical memories. Through this process, social events and stressful experiences are identified and integrated, resulting in a coherent and structured representation of the life course. This enables the analysis of patterns, critical periods, and the accumulation of life experiences over time, contributing to a deeper and more
contextualized understanding of the individual’s life situation and the relationship between life events and health.
