In autumn 2023, it was announced that Umeå Municipality would appoint Emmanuelle Charpentier as an honorary citizen of Umeå.
And now, on 26 September, Charpentier will make a long-awaited visit to Umeå in connection with the honorary citizenship ceremony organised by Umeå Municipality. On the same day, the Nobel Prize winner will visit her former workplace for a talk in Aula Nordica before colleagues, students and other interested parties.
The talk will focus on the important role of research and researchers in society, the future of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing tool, and what it is really like to be awarded a Nobel Prize. Upper secondary school students have also been invited and encouraged to contribute questions.
Emmanuelle Charpentier is the fifth person to be named an honorary citizen of Umeå. Previous recipients of the award include Stieg Larsson, Anita Ingegerd Gradin, Gunnar Nordahl and Lars Widding.
