Klas Markström appointed to the Swedish Research Council’s new committee

NEWS The Swedish Research Council has established a new Committee for Engineering Sciences. One of the appointed members is Klas Markström, Professor at Umeå University.

Earlier this year, the Swedish Research Council decided to establish a dedicated committee for engineering sciences. The background is the Government’s Research and Innovation Bill 2024, which highlights the rapid technological development and the need for major investments in the field.

The Swedish Research Council will therefore divide the current Scientific Council for Natural and Engineering Sciences into two separate councils. Since the new Council for Engineering Sciences cannot be established immediately, a committee has been appointed to serve during the transition period until 2028.

Researchers with strong expertise

“During that time, the committee will, among other tasks, manage several initiatives on excellence clusters in engineering sciences and, together with the current Scientific Council for Natural and Engineering Sciences, prepare for the new council,” says Klas Markström, Professor at the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics.

The Committee for Engineering Sciences will consist of eleven members. At present, nine researchers with strong expertise in engineering and natural sciences have been appointed, while two representatives of research outside academia will be appointed at a later stage.
