For the fourth consecutive year, BalticWaters is awarding grants to early-career researchers - Baltic Sea Fellows. This year, two researchers have been selected, one of whom is Alexandra Rouillard, a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science, as well as Umeå Marine Sciences Centre at Umeå University. Her research project, Historical Genomics of Salmon in the Gulf of Bothnia, aims to map changes in salmon populations from the mid-1800s to the present.
The project is based on analyses of environmental DNA (e-DNA) in sediment samples, providing a unique opportunity to trace how salmon populations have been affected by changes in water quality. By linking these analyses to historical data on water flow and water quality, researchers can better understand how factors such as land use and climate change have influenced salmon habitats.
