Security incident on the Canvas learning platform

NEWS Canvas, the university’s shared learning platform has been the subject of a security incident that may have resulted in a data breach. It is the US-based provider behind the system – Instructure – that has reported to Sunet, the Swedish organisation for national IT services for universities, that a potential data breach may have occurred. At present, however, there is very limited information regarding the extent of the incident and the type of data that may have been leaked.

Canvas is used by thousands of educational institutions worldwide, including several higher education institutions in Sweden, which means that many organisations are simultaneously requesting information from the provider.

As personal data is stored in Canvas, the University’s Data Protection Officer has submitted an initial report of the incident to the Swedish Data Protection Authority (IMY). The university’s crisis management team has been convened and is currently working, among other things, to gather further information.

If you have any concerns regarding this, as a student you can always contact Student Health Services. Staff can contact Occupational Health Services via the Aktum intranet.
