DIGSUM welcomes you to a research seminar about exposure to online hate among teenagers and young adults on February 16 at 13:15 in S-507 (Samvetet).
Our speaker and guest is Pekka Räsänen, Professor of Economic Sociology at the University of Turku, Finland. He will present results from a cross-national investigation showing that while there is a considerable amount of hate material online, the degree to which individuals are exposed to these materials varies. Using samples of youth and young adults from a set of different countries, Räsänen and his colleagues have investigated who is exposed to hate materials. He will address different possible explanations for the fact that there is significant cross-national variation in exposure after accounting for individual-level factors. Drawing on the results the usefulness of anti–hate speech legislation for the online setting is discussed.
