Causation, responsibility and moral norms

Post-doc project What is the relation between causation, responsibility, and moral norms? My aim in this project is to investigate how a rigorous understanding of causation can help to shed light on this question.

Sometimes when bad outcomes occur, it is not immediately clear who is responsible, or even whether anyone is. Climate change is a clear example. My aim in this project is to provide a better understanding of such cases by looking at the connections between causation, responsibility, and moral norms. How do moral norms influence judgements of causation? How do such judgements of causation feed into judgements of responsibility? And can the need to attribute responsibility for bad outcomes be a guide to what our moral norms should be?
