Research project
The project develops circular value chains between land- and water-based industries in the Nordic Green Belt by transforming fish sludge from aquaculture into resources for sustainable agriculture. Through cross-border collaboration, advanced material characterization, plant trials, and techno-economic and environmental analyses, the knowledge base for new industrial symbioses is created that strengthen self-sufficiency, reduce eutrophication, and promote a circular bioeconomy.
The project develops circular value chains where nutrients from fish sludge are returned from sea to land in the Nordic green belt. Umeå University contributes with advanced material characterization of processed sludge products, especially analysis of phosphorus and metals, as a basis for plant trials, legislative adaptation and environmental assessment. Through its methodological expertise, the university connects chemical and technical properties to agricultural effects and supports the development of sustainable industrial symbioses and decision-making.
