Energy Transition in Everyday Life – From Vision to Reality

Research project How does the energy transition move from vision to reality in everyday life? This project places people at the centre by analysing daily routines, travel, and behaviours to understand what is required for different groups to be willing and able to participate in the transition. The aim is to identify what makes change easier or harder, and how our choices shape the future energy system.

The project examines how the energy transition is shaped through the interaction between everyday life and the development of the energy system. By combining activity-based modelling, energy system analysis, and behavioural studies, the project analyses how daily routines, mobility, and energy use affect the load and development of the electricity system. close collaboration with municipalities and energy companies. The project aims to generate knowledge, tools, and policy recommendations that support an efficient, inclusive, and fair energy transition.

Project description

The energy transition is one of the greatest challenges facing society. While technological solutions such as electrification, renewable energy, and energy storage are advancing, everyday life plays a crucial role in how the energy system actually functions.

This project takes a holistic approach to the energy transition by examining the interactions among technology, society, and behaviour. It focuses on how people’s activities, such as travel, work, and household use, influence energy demand and the load on the electricity system, and how the design of the energy system in turn shapes people’s choices.

The project develops an activity-based model that links everyday life, mobility, and energy use. This model is used together with behavioural studies and scenarios to analyse how different groups are affected by and can contribute to the energy transition.

A central part of the project is to identify drivers and barriers to change and ensure the transition is fair and inclusive. The project also analyses concrete measures in collaboration with Umeå Municipality and Umeå Energi, aiming to generate practically useful knowledge.

The results will contribute new models and analytical tools, scenarios for future energy systems, policy recommendations, and decision support for municipalities and energy companies.
