Innovation support in the cultural and creative sectors

Research project The cultural and creative sectors (CCS) contribute with artistic, cultural and creative values as well as employment opportunities. The CCS also has a potential to stimulate innovation and renewal in other sectors. CCS firms may however struggle to fit the scalability logic of traditional innovation support systems. This project therefore focuses on methods designed to support development of new ventures within the CCS, as well as on how to stimulate boundary crossing between different sectors.

The project aims to develop knowledge about how new ventures and innovation can be stimulated within incubators and other creative environments. The studies conducted primarily focus on the CCS, but firms and incubators from other sectors are also included. Topics studied include value creation, sustainability and business model development, different forms of boundary crossing collaboration and strategies to deal with challenges and crises. It's conducted at USBE and constitutes a work package in ”North Sweden Arena for Art, Design, Tech & Business”, coordinated by Uminova eXpression.

Project description

The project aims to develop knowledge about how new ventures and innovation can be stimulates within incubators and other creative environments. The focus is placed on the CCS, but some of the empirical studies include firms and incubators from other sectors.

The project is included as a work package in the program ”North Sweden Arena for Art, Design, Tech & Business”, which is funded by the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth and coordinated by Uminova eXpression. North Sweden Arena for Art, Design, Tech & Business aims to strengthen renewal and innovation in Region Västerbotten through the CCS, and supports different activities in the development of the incubator Uminova eXpression’s innovation platform.

The project comprises several types of studies:

  1. Literature studies to map and build on research on innovative processes and methods for support in the context of the CCS.
  2. Empirical studies of processes and methods used by Uminova eXpression, focused on supporting new business ventures and/or to stimulate boundary crossing meeting places and collaboration.
  3. Empirical studies of corresponding processes and methods as well as forms and conditions for innovation support within the CCS and the tech sector.

When the project has been completed, the results will be compiled into a book and published by an international publishing company.
