PhD project
The sami political movement was initially upheld by a limited number of people who had a significant impact on its continued evolvement during the 20th century. One of them was Israel Ruong, who aimed to improve the rights of the sami people.
He had a particular interest in education and its importance for the sami people. He was a researcher at Uppsala University, the first sami nomad-school inspector and chairman of the National Union of the Swedish Sami (SSR). The importance of his efforts has been highlighted before, however there is no in-depth biographical work about him yet. With my PhD-project, I aim to do an in-depth analysis of Israel Ruong’s life in the form of a biography, focusing on education.
