School absenteeism — a complex phenomenon

PhD project Unauthorized absence from school and in particular prolonged absenteeism are challenging phenomena that are increasingly noted in Sweden and internationally.

In Sweden, all children have a statutory right to education and schooling is compulsory from autumn term in the year they reach the age of 7, and the main rule is that compulsory school attendance ceases at the end of the spring term in the 9th year (10th year in the special school). Prolonged absence from school reduces the likelihood that the goals of compulsory education are achieved, as the right to education is not taken up or provided in another form. Such prolonged absences from compulsory schooling lead to major challenges and costs not only for the individual child, but also for society.
