Where does the carbon stored in Baltic Sea sediments come from?
Research project
The Baltic Sea is a powerhouse for the storage of organic carbon and thus an important contributor to the reduction of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as a nature-based solution to climate change. This project will determine the source of organic carbon buried in the Baltic Sea with a focus on characterizing the chemical fingerprints of potential source material.
to 50 percent of the organic carbon buried in marine sediments may be of terrestrial origin, but we know very little about its origin and quality. Different sources of organic carbon can change the capacity of carbon pools in marine sediments to serve as nature-based solutions. To increase understanding, we need to identify the sources that supply organic carbon to the carbon sinks in the Baltic Sea.
