Checklist for the start of your studies
Before the first day of your education, you need to take some important steps.
1.Reply to your offer
Have you been admitted to a course or programme, but do not wish to keep your place? Then you should decline your offer by logging in to your account at Universityadmissions.se. In doing so, you free up your place to someone who is on the waiting list.
2.Activate your user account and MFA
As a new student, you need to activate your user account (your UMU-id) approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.
With your user account you can:
- register for courses
- access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
- submit assignments and verify your study results
- access your student e-mail
If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.
Exchange student or tuition fee paying student
If you are an exchange student or tuition fee paying student, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your account.
Install MFA for a more secure login
To increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your information or account, students must enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log in to various systems, such as Canvas and the Student Web.

Help! It´s not working
If you are having problems activating your account or logging in, please contact our Servicedesk. You will find answers to common questions, and can submit enquiries.
3.Course registration
When you have replied to the Notification of Selection Results, you must register. Registration takes place at the start of the course, between 24 august - 2 september. If you have not registered in due time you may lose your place.
By registering, you state that you intend to take part in the course. You must be registered in the Ladok student registry to be allowed to take the course and to get your results recorded during the course.
If you already know that you will not be able to register during this period, you must notify us before the registration deadline.
E-mail: studieadm.samrehab@umu.se
If you experience an acute illness or another unforeseen circumstance that prevents you from registering, you must contact us as soon as possible. Please note that a medical certificate will be required.
4.Course start
2026-08-31
16:00-17:30
The schedule is preliminary until four weeks before the course starts
This course provides an in-depth exploration of nutritional and physiological aspects of health, physical activity, and sports performance. Throughout the course, we will examine topics such as body composition, anthropometry, energy expenditure, substrate utilization during rest and exercise, nutritional deficiencies, obesity, dietary interventions, and the use of dietary supplements. The course combines theoretical knowledge with practical applications. You will participate in digital and recorded lectures, seminars, and group-based learning activities. A central component of the course is a client project, where you will apply scientific based knowledge and established assessment methods to evaluate dietary habits and estimated energy expenditure. The client may be an athlete or an individual seeking to improve health, fitness, and nutritional status.
Course format
The course is delivered fully online, allowing you to participate regardless of your geographical location. Most course activities, including lectures, discussions, seminars, and assignments, will be conducted digitally through the university's learning platform (Canvas) and online Zoom meetings, here is a guide to the most common features of Zoom. Log into Zoom using your UMU ID.
Please note that there is one mandatory on-campus session during the course: the written examination. Information regarding the date, location, and practical arrangements for the examination will be provided well in advance, see schedule.
Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide you with the knowledge and skills to:
- Explain how physical activity and inactivity influence nutritional physiology and macronutrient metabolism.
- Evaluate nutritional deficiencies and their physiological consequences.
- Apply evidence-based dietary strategies for active individuals and athletes.
- Gain knowledge of methods used to analyse body composition, bone density, energy expenditure, and substrate utilization.
- Design individualized nutrition plans and provide nutritional guidance based on a client's goals, health status, and activity level.
- Critically evaluate the benefits/risks of dietary supplements and weight-management strategies.
A strong emphasis will be placed on critical thinking, scientific reasoning, and the ability to interpret and apply findings from research literature. Active participation in discussions and seminars will be important for your learning experience and success in the course.
Before the first session, please make sure that you have access to CANVAS, the course platform, and familiarize yourself with the course syllabus. Additional information regarding the schedule, course materials, and practical arrangements will be available there.
