Welcome to your studies!

Please be welcome to the course Forest ecology. My name is Daniel Metcalfe and I am the course co-ordinator. On this page you will find important and useful information, so please read it carefully. Please note that this course will be held in English. If you have any questions, please contact me at daniel.metcalfe@umu.se. Looking forward to meeting you in August!

Checklist for the start of your studies

Before the first day of your education, you need to take some important steps.

1.Your offer

You have been admitted. If you want to keep your place (seat), you do not have to reply to your offer.

If you do not want to keep your place you should decline your offer by logging in to 'My pages' on universityadmissions.se, and follow the instructions. You should click "I wish to decline this offer" next to the course or programme you want to decline.

If you see "Reserve" next to your course or programme in the Notification of selection results, this means that you've been placed on a waiting list for that course/programme.

2.Activate your user account and MFA

As a new student, you need to activate your user account (your UMU-id) approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

With your user account you can:

  • register for courses
  • access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
  • submit assignments and verify your study results
  • access your student e-mail

If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

Exchange student or tuition fee paying student

If you are an exchange student or tuition fee paying student, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your account.

Install MFA for a more secure login

To increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your information or account, students must enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log in to various systems, such as Canvas and the Student Web.

You need to register in the study documentation system Ladok in order to keep your place and to have your results recorded during the course.

Online registration is open between 24 August and 2 September.

About the course

Field excursions

The course includes several days of field excursions to field experiments, natural and managed forests. Examples of the impact of forestry on biodiversity and forest structure are demonstrated, as well as training in forest inventory techniques and species determination. One of the field excursions includes two overnight stays in a hotel near the field sites. Field excursions are mandatory (obligatoriska) and you need to be equipped with warm and water-proof clothing and sturdy shoes to attend these. To derive most benefit from the excursions it is a good idea to go through the supplied background reading thoroughly beforehand.

Course literature

The course will be large based on core chapters of the Routledge Handbook of Forest Ecology. More detailed literature specific to individual course components will be available on the course webpage.

Canvas learning platform

In this course, we use the learning platform Canvas. There you will find for example reading materials, instructions for exercises, lecture notes, and messages from the teachers. Examination tasks will be published there, and when you have completed an examination, you shall upload it to the platform.

In order to get access to the learning platform, you sign in using your UMU-id.

About grading

This course use only three grades: Pass, Pass with distinction or Fail, which means that no overall grade is given for a degree and students are not ranked. This is because the way of grading is fundamentally different and no finer scale exists. It implies that your home university is responsible for the conversion of the Swedish grades. To support the translation, course leaders can provide ECTS grading table that is used at Umeå University. It shows the distribution of awarded grades among students of that course.
