Meno Clinic
Visiting the gynecologist can be a very uncomfortable experience, mentally as well as physically. A lot of this can be related to the design, or rather lack of design of the patient room. I have done this in collaboration with the Umeå University Hospital and the youth care center in Umeå.
During my research, I visited different gynecologist clinics here in Umeå to see how they differ. I also created a questionnaire to get a bigger picture of what women's experiences and how they wanted to experience the room. Many women thought the patient room today where very boring: cold colors, hospital feeling, and there was no thought behind it. They wanted to have more colors, screened walls between the exam area and the door, somewhere to change, and more human and friendly. The room today is designed from the doctor's perspective and not from the patient.
My focus area was the flow of the patient in the room. Through my research I found that a lot of women thought it was very uncomfortable to walk in front of the doctor and also the lack of a private area to undress for the exam.
The result of my project is a thoughtfully planned patient room where the patient doesn’t have to go undressed in front of the gynecologist and where the gynecological chair is strategically screened from the door. All to ensure a more comfortable experience of going to the gynecologist.
