The Flip-Seat

Design Project 2 (BFA2) 2025

This collaborative project with Europe’s Rail is part of a larger EU initiative focusing on EU railways. The project falls under FP6 - FutuRe, which focuses on improving the profitability of regional rail traffic. The project is about developing a modular interior for an autonomous rail bus. Through research, I formulated two questions: how to create a secure environment and feeling for passengers and how to create social interaction on board. The outcome is an adaptable seat for standing and sitting passengers. The flip-seat gives the choice of either standing up and leaning against it or sitting on it. The seat is half the width of a normal seat, meaning that each passenger uses several seats to sit on, creating an inclusive environment for passengers of all sizes while maximising passenger capacity on the railbus. The seating is mounted on a modular rail system allowing the layout to be adapted to regional and seasonal needs.
