When placing the test spoon with the melted chocolate the display will guide you through the testing.
Nora
In collaboration with Nordic Chocolate, this project aimed to develop a product concept for chocolate tempering testing targeted at home users and small-scale producers. Tempering is a crucial part of chocolate production, as the process directly affects the quality, texture, and durability of the final product. Existing solutions are often expensive or involve manual procedures, creating a need for more accessible and user-friendly alternatives. The project was carried out over a five-week period and was based on the Design Council’s Double Diamond design model. The process included research, observations, user personas, concept development, and the creation of both digital and physical prototypes. Multiple concepts were developed and evaluated based on user needs, functional requirements, and sustainability considerations. The final outcome resulted in the product concept Nora, an automated and user-friendly solution for chocolate tempering testing. The product combines a bio-based Phase Change Material (PCM) with an electrically powered Peltier cooling system to achieve stable temperature regulation. The concept also includes an integrated display, temperature visualisation, and features for data history and user guidance.
Display illustrations throughout the process. Home page, picking chocolate type, choosing temperature, checking humidity and result curve.
Exploded view with inner components. Phase Changing Material (PCM) is used to store the intended temperature (5-6 degrees) for a longer time.
Ventilation holes inspired by the Hydrated Salts material (PCM). The shape of the holes are illustrating the shape of a salt crystal.
Two colors combinations to fit in both a professional and home environment. Inspired by chocolate and hydrated salt (PCM).
Spoon and scrape are helping tools for a fun and intuitive process when picking up the chocolate. Reusable spoons instead of single-use cups supports sustainability.
