Designing with Haptic Feedback
Hapticlabs.io is a toolset for designers which simplifies the process of creating, implementing and evaluating haptic feedback. Most interactions with physical objects are based on three senses: Sight, hearing and touch. Although we highly rely on visual communication nowadays, haptic feedback is involved in every interaction and plays a significant role in how we perceive our surroundings.
One major reason why there are only few applications available incorporating active haptic feedback is the complex design process. It requires a profound understanding of electronics, coding, physiology and psychology. Unfortunately there is also little support and guidance available to get you started or help you during the process.
Together with Intuity Media Lab, I explored the opportunities of haptic feedback from the perspective of an industrial designer.
The outcome is called hapticlabs.io: and consists of two parts:
The prototyping kit allows you to design, evaluate, and integrate haptic feedback without requiring any expertise in coding or electronics. Through the mobile application, you can create feedback patterns by arranging the haptic blocks and tailor them to your needs. At any time you can trigger and evaluate your design in real-time through the wireless satellite unit right on your desktop, down in the workshop, or outside in a user test.
The knowledgebase provides you with everything you need to know to get started: A onboarding tutorials with condensed and easy-to-digest background information, opportunity areas showcasing capabilities and example case studies to inspire your next project and a collection of design principles guiding you through the process, avoiding pitfalls along the way.
