Future Traffic Controls and Interventions

Methodology in Product Design (APD1) 2022

The project was done in collaboration with the Swedish Police and the Police Education Unit at Umeå University, with the focus to improve the working environment of the police officers maintaining public order and traffic safety. The objective was to explore the product solutions the police officers have with them in their police cars, motorcycles, and vans today, for both planned controls and for when urgent interventions are needed.

Process

To kick-off the project, user observations was carried out as a class activity at practise sessions of different road scenarios arranged by the Police Education Unit. The police students that were practising, were in their fourth and final term, their last before starting their work practise in the field. Besides this, a team of two experienced police officers were assigned as contact persons throughout the projects. They generously shared their experiences and hands-on insights to all the equipment they use in the field today.

Outcome

The outcome were ten projects with visionary solutions for how to improve the working environment and safety of police officers through wearable, on-ground and airborne solutions to enhance the officer’s context awareness or visibility for others, as well as new solutions of documentation, communication and first aid assistance, together with concepts for a new solution to weighing vehicles and for preforming time-efficient and non-intrusive drug testing on-site.
