Sensor X + FLIR
The starting point for this project was to get an understanding of the company FLIR's present product segments, the users and the technologies they interact with, as well as gaining an overview of the visual design language applied across these. The next step was to consider the opportunities when combining existing or new emerging sensor technologies with FLIR's current field of expertise and offerings and explore and ideate freely on new potential product applications for either ex¬isting or new business areas and user groups. Another key element, done in parallel with this, was to methodically define a design language for these new applications, with consideration to FLIR's design heritage and new future.
Process
Besides hand-on try-outs of existing FLIR products and an introduction to the company in large together with own desktop research into competitors and emerging technologies, three local field trips were arranged around the city of Umeå at Komatsu Forest, the local dairy Norrmejerier and at ATEA an IT Service provider.
Based on this, the students started ideating freely on new relevant business areas and applications, which they shared with FLIR during several gateways and with external and internal tutors throughout the project.
Outcome
The outcome were eight concepts covering as diverse fields as: mental health monitoring, food analysis at home, safety and security monitoring of batteries in electric vehicles, skin cancer monitoring, assistance device for paramedics, quality assurance of parts in assembly industries, analysis in food production and tethering of containers on ships.
