Cisco is where the home is
This project was done in close collaboration with Cisco’s design team in Oslo, Norway. The creative challenge was to strategically ideate on future market opportunities for the home segment 5-10 years into the future and design a home product that would for these and honours Cisco’s legacy of ease of use, high quality, and first-class technology. The new consumer and target groups could range across all ages, genders and needs, just as long as the help of intelligent systems and smart devices could improve their daily life at home.
Process
The course started with a deep dive into the creative development of different types of personas and their experiences of home. Besides this, the students were encouraged look at Cisco’s three existing professional business segments of networking, security and collaboration and the technologies, offerings, and opportunities within these, but again seen through the lens of the home and the needs of the persona.
Besides looking for a relevant design opportunity, a parallel track of this course was the strategic development of a form language, suitable for each of the students new proposals for Cisco product offerings.
Outcome
The outcome were nine projects with new takes on what Cisco could offer and look in a home environment context. The students’ visions covered everything from learning tools and experiences for children, multiple purpose device for leisure and work in the home, tangible unlocking of digital assets, hardware for new meeting interactions using avatars off-camera, solutions for digital nomads, cooking and interacting together while being afar, overview of the internet use in the family, personal monitoring of health and unobtrusive safety systems for the home.

Cosima Pauli & Nicolò Vincenzi / Cisco Notes: A compact digital notebook for digital nomads that sorts handwritten and spoken input into a desktop application.
Julius Bahl / Hemven: A smart camera, projector and speaker system that allows one to effortlessly connect with friends and family while cooking together.
Isabelle Olsson / Cisco Aware: A router solution that provides and communicates a safe internet experience and usage for the whole household regardless of age.
Frida Neckmar / Sentio: A personal health and safety hub utilizing unobtrusive WIFI-sensing for passive detection of falls, motion, and monitoring of vital signs.
Pierre Brand / Cisco Safe Home: An unobtrusive and easy-to-deploy security system consisting of three products for detecting vibration, human activity and video capturing.
