Neighbourhood garage

General Product (IxD1) 2025

Neighbourhood Garage explores how service design can support older adults as they navigate the social and emotional shifts associated with aging, particularly during life transitions. Centered around the everyday space of a neighbourhood garage, the project asks what happens when familiar settings become catalysts for connection, contribution, and care. Through elements like shared tools, communal calendars, and subtle prompts for participation, the project investigates how informal, embedded services can foster new forms of neighbourhood support and belonging. Developed in close collaboration with seniors using a participatory design approach, the outcome is a system of adaptable, low-threshold interventions that invite engagement without pressure. Rather than prescribing fixed activities, each design gesture opens space for small interactions, mutual aid, and individually defined participation. Neighbourhood Garage builds on the familiarity of communal environments, introducing intentional touchpoints that nurture connection and shared ownership.
