Contextual audio traces reveal stories, history, and local knowledge tied directly to the landscapes passing outside the train window.
Extended Norrtågland
Extended Norrtågland is a service design concept that repositions Norrtåg as a gateway to discovery for leisure travellers across Sweden. Built on and characterised by a shift from destination-driven to experience-driven journeys, a growing appreciation for slow travel, and a desire for authentic local connection — the service extends the Norrtåg’s experience beyond transportation. Through an interconnected ecosystem of digital touch points, Extended Norrtågland supports Norrtåg, regional partners and travellers by building anticipation for travellers before a trip, supporting people to discover new experiences through places and traces and encourages reminiscing on memories once a trip has come to an end.
About the course
In this IxD1 course, students explored the future of rail travel in collaboration with Norrtåg, examining how trains can become gateways to richer, experience-led journeys across northern Sweden. Through a process of field research, stakeholder engagement, and iterative prototyping, students developed service concepts that extend the travel experience beyond transportation itself. The projects shift focus from destination-based travel to journeys shaped by anticipation, discovery, and reflection, supporting meaningful connections with local places, people, and cultures. By working across digital and physical touchpoints, students designed integrated service ecosystems that build engagement before departure, enrich experiences along the way, and sustain memories after the यात्रा has ended, demonstrating how thoughtful design can strengthen both regional value and traveller experience.

Traces extend beyond the train, allowing travellers to discover personal stories, recommendations, and memories at partner experiences.
The contextual journey ecosystem combines personalised discovery, community traces, and memory collection.
We hosted a co-creation workshop where students planned a journey together, using collages as a tool for experience-based travel planning.
A pendant accompanied travellers throughout their trip, acting as a playful tool for collecting memories and experiences.
We transformed participants’ collages into personalised, functional tickets that celebrated the moment of committing to a journey.
Extending beyond transportation, the Experience Ticket connects travellers to local experiences, benefits, and stories along their journey.
The website enables travellers to explore Norrtågland through an interactive map of experiences, destinations, and local partners.
