Looking Back

Degree Project 2021

Here at the end of the educational journey I would like to take a moment to look back at my experiences so far. My name is Sophie Tillema, a curious, passionate automotive designer from the Netherlands. My design journey has led me to many inspirational places around the world, continuously searching for new inspiration and challenges. Here, I would like to share some of my work in the hope you will be inspired in some way.

Unfortunately, at this moment in time I am unable to share my latest work. The degree project has been created in collaboration with Volvo cars, and therefore remains confidential. Nonetheless I would like to take this opportunity to talk about my educational journey and share some thoughts I developed along the way on the role of designers in the future of the automotive industry.

My journey has always been about the balance in art, technology and design.

All the experiences I had so far, moving to different countries, seeing a variety of schools, companies and connecting with people from all over the world, have enrichened my life and made me grow as a designer, by constantly shaping my reasoning and purpose in design.
Becoming a designer is a commitment for life. The way to become a designer cannot be seen as solely a process of improving skills, it is as much about growing as a person, that adds up to a unique design character.

Along the way I am gaining awareness and acceptation for the fact that one can never have seen and learned everything, as well as the uncomfortable fear of the unknown while creating something that doesn’t exist yet. I’d like to see design as an endless road of discovery.

Designers are always on the edge of development, and should be aware of the impact they have while designing for the future. As collectors of information and translators into future scenario’s, it is a designer’s duty to attentively take into account all the aspects at stake to create solutions that intentionally contribute positively to the people and the world that surrounds them.

Along the way my reasoning for being in mobility design is shaping. Human kind is always longing for exploration and mobility is the enabler of freedom. For me mobility is always about people and creating something meaningful for them. Regardless if it is a thrilling sportscar or an urban mobility system, I want to ‘’move’’ people, make them dream by creating desirable products. Creating a future mobility vision which creates awareness and people can relate to.

I feel excited and honoured to have the possibility to explore and contribute to the transition process of transportation design towards a better future.
