Volvo M Office

Degree Project 2022

Volvo M-Office Project is an exploration about the role of mobility in the future where people have very few urban travelling needs with help of remote working. Proposing a subscription-based service model to support urban anywhere-working experience in 2035, the author intends to trigger innovation about the economics of the transportation industry in the time of sharing mobility.

With more activities get switched to online platform, the boundaries between life segments will become dissolved, which leads to a rapid-switching life style for urban people in 2035. For many people this trend will lead to uncontrollable working hours, few emotional contacts, and social isolation. Arranging the costly office land dynamically and provide better working/collaboration condition to their employees will be the huge problem for companies in 2035.

Volvo M-Office Service is a systemic business solution for remote companies to solve the issue. With subscription to the service, the companies can assign M-Office Mobilities to their employees or departments in need. And the service node named Volvo Working Hub will be able to support the process.

No longer focus on the journey from A to B, the Volvo M-Office Mobility is designated to be the working-life adaptor, to help us to reconnect and rearrange our life segments in 2035. With that in mind, among the design process, the author was focused to break through the traditional structure of the vehicle, to make it be able to fit multi using scenarios, including personal work, team collaboration and social.

With searching references and inspiration from different design fields, the author took the idea of a spinnable-sliding wall structure from architecture interior as the main structure to guide the design. The structure enable the rear door to divide the interior space in a dynamic way, while also provide an easy entrance for the user to switch from different postures under different using scenarios.

The other component of the Volvo M-Office Service, the Volvo Working Hub, is an architecture which can provide an integration mode to the Volvo M Mobilities, in order to create Volvo-branded experience for the users. By turning the urban dealerships into services nodes located in 15-minute communities, the industry will be able to run on a more sustainable mode and rebuild the brand-user-community connection in the context of sharing mobility.
