AGIS_02

Strategic Design (TD1) 2026

AGIS_02 is a modular support platform designed for remote industrial operations and disaster-prone regions. Developed as part of the AGIS system, it serves as a mobile hub for transporting equipment, deploying autonomous field units, and supporting the creation of digital twins for site monitoring and planning. Inspired by the realities of mining and construction work in vulnerable environments such as Dinagat Island in the Philippines, AGIS_02 is designed to provide value both during everyday operations and in times of crisis. Working alongside AGIS_01, it enables efficient logistics, data collection, and site coordination under normal conditions, while shifting to a disaster-response role when needed, transporting people, supplies, and critical resources across affected areas. By combining operational support with emergency preparedness, AGIS_02 presents a new approach to resilient infrastructure and mobility.

Mission: Coordinated Mobility

Strategic Design | 2026

In this project, students were asked to propose brand-led vehicle concepts for crisis logistics as part of Volvo Construction Equipment's future vision for 2036. Working as strategic design teams, students explored how mobility solutions could support disaster response and recovery while acting as positive brand ambassadors in crisis-affected contexts. The aim was to identify meaningful opportunities where Volvo CE's expertise, sustainability ambitions, and brand values could create value for customers, communities, and society through resilient and scalable mobility systems.

Process

The course began with team-building activities and the establishment of team contracts to support collaboration throughout the project. Students then immersed themselves in Volvo CE's brand, products, and strategic ambitions through a study visit, lectures, and workshops. This phase focused on understanding real-world challenges in disaster response, identifying stakeholder needs, and defining key project parameters.

During the Sense-Making & Strategy phase, each team developed its own strategic framework, design brief, and work plan, outlining target users, design opportunities, project goals, and milestones. This foundation enabled teams to explore distinct directions while ensuring alignment with Volvo CE's values and long-term vision.

The Exploration & Presentation phase encouraged a design workflow that combined 2D and 3D development. Students engaged stakeholders throughout the process to validate requirements and ensure concepts reflected both brand identity and practical needs. Supported by tutoring, lectures, and collaborative ideation sessions, teams developed and communicated their proposals through visualisations, presentations, and design narratives.

Outcome

The outcome was a series of speculative vehicle concepts and coordinated mobility solutions designed to strengthen disaster response and crisis logistics in 2036. Each proposal aimed to demonstrate how Volvo CE could extend its role beyond construction equipment by contributing to resilient, sustainable, and human-centred mobility systems. Final concepts were presented through team pitches, supported by slides, posters, and high-quality 3D visualisations, making a compelling case for further development and future implementation.

AGIS_02 initial sketch shows it can have modular transport system that can provide different cargo transportation including repairing material, extra AGIS_01 or supporting supplies.

The sketch indicate that AGIS_02’s rough proportion and scale.

On a construction site, the AGIS_02 can carry AGIS_01. It’s outrages off-road performance enable Agis_02 stay and across most construction sites. AGIS_02 can assist the AGIS__01 to do digital-twin for the construction site.

Ronggang Bao – AGIS_02

If needed, AGIS__02 can open the cargo, releasing the repairing part and with the assistance of Agis 01, the broken construction machine can be repaired immediately without being transported to the dealership and off-work for certain period of time.

During the evacuation and alarming time, AGIS__02 can carry the AGIS__01 around the target area through existing road system. Constraint size enables AGIS__02 fit in most road.

Ronggang Bao – AGIS_02

During a disaster relief period, AGIS__02 can carry extra AGIS__01 and multiple supplies to help relief the suffered area.

The front part of AGIS__02 can open to offer a place for drivers get in and out. This is supposed to bring more flexibility and agility to package the whole vehicle.

Ronggang Bao – AGIS_02

The front of AGIS__02 shows a sense of wise power, it convey a feeling of confident and calm performance.

The back of the AGIS_02 also shows the confident honor of being a Volvo CE product. The alarming light on the vehicle is carefully placed to not hurt someone’s head and provide enough alarming function.

The side proportion is well constraint and controlled to follow most on-road requirement. The sense of the whole design is meant to be a gentle giant which can support the construction site and the disaster site.
