AI and examination

Here you can find information about AI and examination and what is currently taking place.

Would you like to contribute?

We are now looking for interested teachers from across the university who would like to contribute experiences, perspectives, or development ideas within this area of work. By participating, you become part of the university’s collective development efforts and help shape sustainable, well considered, and pedagogically grounded approaches in relation to AI.

When AI Changes the Conditions for Examination and Assessment

AI and assessment explores how generative artificial intelligence is changing the conditions for assessment, learning, and academic quality in higher education. The starting point is that AI not only introduces risks to academic integrity but also creates opportunities to develop more authentic and learning oriented forms of assessment. This part of the broader AI for Learning initiative draws on current research that highlights a shift from controlling performance toward assessment that supports reflection, feedback, and the development of judgement.

The work aims to contribute to the sustainable development of assessment practices at Umeå University. This involves developing principles, examples, and approaches that make students’ actual knowledge visible and strengthen both subject specific and generic competencies. Pedagogical development is combined with organisational anchoring so that these changes become integrated into the university’s quality work.

The work will be carried out through dialogue, pilot initiatives, and collegial learning in collaboration between teachers, educational leaders, and students. Particular focus is placed on how AI can be used transparently and responsibly as a learning tool, and on how assessment can promote critical thinking, metacognition, and professional preparedness.
