Image: Mattias Pettersson

Do you dream of creating games? Now’s your chance! Whether you’re a beginner or have experience, we invite you to an intense and creative 48-hour Game Jam at Umeå University. Over one weekend, we’ll gather in small groups to create brand new games from scratch – all based on a secret theme revealed at the start. Here, you’ll get the chance to test ideas, learn new things, and meet other game enthusiasts! The event is led by game profile Harry Heath, Cold Sector.

Short about Game Jam

What is a Game Jam?

A Game Jam is an event where participants collaborate to create games (digital, board, card games, etc.) within a limited time frame. It’s all about experimenting, challenging yourself, and having fun – and the time pressure often leads to unexpected and creative solutions! The Game Jam runs from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon – but don’t forget to sleep, eat, and take breaks!

When, where, and how?

📅 When: October 31 – November 2
📍 Where: Rotundan, Umeå University

Who can participate?

Everyone over 16 is welcome! You don’t need any previous experience in game development – curiosity and a willingness to try is enough. We believe you have an interest in games, game design, programming, sketching, project management, sound design, or storytelling. You might be a high school student, university student, indie developer, musician, graphic designer, or just generally interested in games – both beginners and experienced participants are welcome.

How does it work:

  • Sign up by yourself, with a friend, or as a team – we’ll make sure everyone gets to join a team!
  • The recommended maximum team size is 6 people, but you can also participate solo or in a smaller group.
  • Is your team missing a specific role (e.g., artist or programmer)? Why not find new teammates at the event?
  • All teams are encouraged to showcase their game at the end of the jam – either with a short presentation or a live demo.

Prizes and awards

We plan to award prizes to games that stand out in various categories. There will also be extra optional challenges for those who want to take their game idea even further. Only teams that present their game will be considered for judging.

Organizers:

Department of Computing Science, Game Attraction North, A Working Lab, Lan by CS, and Harry Heath (Cold Sector).

In collaboration with: Region Norrbotten and Region Västerbotten.
