Short-term mobility opportunities

A short-term mobility at Umeå University offers you the chance to study abroad for a period shorter than a full academic semester, typically around five weeks. It is an ideal option if you want to gain international experience without committing to a long stay abroad.

What is a short-term mobility?

A short-term mobility is an opportunity to study as an exchange student for a period shorter than an entire academic semester.

How to apply for a short-term mobility? 

For all courses 

All students who wish to apply for a short-term mobility are welcome to follow the same process and deadlines available for semester students.

For example, you may apply for courses held during the period January-February by applying by the same deadline as semester students. 

Timeline for exchange students

Late applications for May-June period 

If you wish to send a late application for the May-June period, you may exclusively apply for the courses listed below, and these applications will be processed on a first come first served basis:

  • Modernism in Sweden: Art, Architecture, and Literature - 7,5 ECTS
  • Exploring Swden - 7,5 ECTS
  • Journalism, Media, and Communications in Sweden - 7,5 ECTS
  • Democracy, Human Rights, and Sustainability: Global Perspective in Education – 7,5 ECTS
  • Sami and Old Norse Religion/Nordic Religions - 7,5 ECTS
  • Swedish Culinary Traditions - 7,5 ECTS
  • Personality Psychology - 7,5 ECTS
  • Finance - 7,5 ECTS
  • Managerial Accounting - 7,5 ECTS
  • Organizational Change - 7,5 ECTS

In order to apply in this application round you need to follow the steps below:

  • Your home university exchange coordinator nominates you between 1 January – 1 February.
  • All nominated students must complete their nomination and application by following the instructions sent to them via email. Instructions will be sent via email to all students at the same time (make sure to check your spam folder for emails from Solemove!) Applications will be processed on a first come first served basis until the 15 February.

How long does a short-term mobility last? 

If you apply for one 7,5 credits full-time course, your mobility will last approximately five weeks. 

Which courses can I apply for? 

Browse the course catalogue for exchange students via the link below by filtering by course start in order to find courses relevant to you. For example, if you wish to come to Umeå during the January-February period, filter by Course start (week starting on) - 19 January.

After being admitted as an exchange student you can apply for housing through Umeå University's Accommodation Service. Please not that accomodation is not guaranteed.

For questions concerning visa please reach out to the Swedish Migration Agency.  

We also recommend reading about the requirements for citizens of non-EU countries. Some of you may not need a residence permit for a short-term stay (under 90 days).
