Scholarships

Umeå University offers scholarships to talented and high-achieving students from outside the EU/EEA. Each year, a selection of top academic students studying an English-language degree programme at Umeå University is awarded a scholarship based upon academic merit.

Timeline for 2025

Please note that the dates are approximate until updated.

The form to register interest for scholarships for 2025–2026 has closed.

15 January: Deadline to make changes to university priority order on University Admissions.  

3 February: Deadline to pay application fee on University Admissions. 

5–9 February: A personal invitation will be sent out via email to all eligible students.

5 March at 23:59 CET: Deadline to register interest for a scholarship.

Late April: Scholarship results are announced via email.

Umeå University Scholarship for International Students

Umeå University offers scholarships each year, in conjunction with the autumn semester admission, to academically talented and high-achieving students. Scholarships offered are in the form of tuition-waivers. Selected candidates receive a full or partial waiver of the tuition fee.

Scholarship eligibility

We welcome you to register interest in a scholarship if you:

  • are a citizen of a country outside of the EU/EEA and Switzerland;
  • have applied for a full programme at Umeå University (Bachelor’s or Master’s);
  • have completed your application for programme studies before the application deadline on 15 January 2025;
  • have paid the application fee by 3 February 2025; and
  • have chosen a Umeå University programme as priority 1 on the University Admissions website by 15 January 2025 at the latest.

The selections are based on the applicant's academic merit. A committee within each respective faculty is tasked with selecting candidates for scholarships.

Register interest for a scholarship

When the form to register interest opens, eligible students will receive an email with instructions. The email is sent to the email address you have provided through your account on University Admissions. Only applicants with a Umeå University programme as priority 1 on University Admissions, as of their application deadline, or second year master students at Umeå University (i.e. students who are currently in their first year of their Master's studies) are eligible to register interest for a scholarship.

As a new student, your invitation to register interest for a scholarship is connected to your priority 1 programme. If you do not receive a place on your first-hand choice, but are admitted to another programme at Umeå University, it is not possible to register interest for a scholarship for the other programme instead.

If you are an eligible student and have not received an email after the dates listed above to register interest, contact us at tuitionfees@umu.se.

Current student at Umeå University 

If you are currently studying at Umeå University, and will continue your studies the upcoming academic year, you are also welcome to register interest. 

If you are among the eligible current students, you will also receive an invitation to register. This will be sent to the email address your registered on University Admissions.

Erling-Persson Scholarship for International Students in Public Health

Umeå University offers scholarships each year, in conjunction with the autumn semester admission, to academically talented and high-achieving students in public health. This scholarship is sponsored by a donation from the Erling-Persson Family Foundation.

Five new students will be offered this scholarship every year. Selected candidates receive full tuition waivers as well as an allowance of SEK 12,000 per month.

Scholarship eligibility

We welcome you to register interest for a scholarship if you:

  • are a citizen of a country outside of the EU/EEA and Switzerland;
  • have completed your application for programme studies in public health at Master's level before the application deadline on 15 January;
  • have paid the application fee by 3 February; and
  • have chosen a Umeå University programme as priority 1 on the University Admissions website by 15 January 2025 at the latest.

The selections are based entirely on the applicant's academic merit. A committee within each respective faculty is tasked with selecting candidates for scholarships.

Design by Umeå Scholarships for International Students

Umeå University offers scholarships as part of a collaboration with Umeå municipality in conjunction with the autumn semester admissions. The scholarships are offered to academically talented and high-achieving design students in the form of tuition-waivers. Selected candidates receive a full or partial waiver of the tuition fee.

The scholarships are funded by a donation from Umeå kommun (Umeå municipality).

Scholarship eligibility

We welcome you to register interest for a scholarship if you:

  • are a citizen of a country outside of the EU/EEA and Switzerland;
  • have completed your application for programme studies in design at Master's level (before the application deadline of 15 January) and have paid the application fee by 3 February 2025 at the latest; and
  • have chosen a Umeå University programme as priority 1 on the University Admissions website by 15 January at the latest.

The selections are based entirely on the applicant's academic merit. A committee within each respective faculty is tasked with selecting candidates for scholarships.

SI Scholarship – Pioneering Women in STEM

Pioneering Women in STEM is a new initiative offered by the Swedish Institute, aiming to empower women within the field of STEM. This scholarship is aimed towards women from ten designated countries, with nine Umeå University Masters’ programmes being eligible. The scholarship covers the full tuition fee for the programme, a monthly stipend of SEK 12,000 and a one-time travel grant payment of SEK 15,000. 

The selection process is administered at Umeå University, with the scholarship being funded by the Swedish Institute.

Scholarship eligibility

You will be invited to register interest in the scholarship provided that you:

  • can provide a passport that proves you meet the eligibility requirements as stated by the Swedish Institute;
  • have applied for one of the eligible Umeå University programmes in the first/international admissions round on University Admissions;
  • have completed your application for programme studies before the application deadline of 15 January 2025;
  • have one of the eligible Umeå University programmes as priority 1 on the University Admissions website by 15 January 2025 at the latest; and
  • have paid the application fee by 3 February.

The eligible programmes are:

  • Master’s Programme in Advanced Product Design
  • Master’s Programme in Architecture and Urban Design
  • Master’s Programme in Chemistry
  • Master's Programme in Earth Science
  • Master's Programme in Ecology
  • Master's Programme in Interaction Design
  • Master's Programme in Molecular Biology
  • Master's Programme in Plant and Forest Biotechnology
  • Master's Programme in Transportation Design

Selection process for a scholarship

After the deadline to register interest for a scholarship has passed, a committee within the Faculty of Science and Technology is tasked with selecting candidates for scholarships. The selections are based on the applicant's academic merit.

All students will be contacted regarding the result of their interest registration by the date listed above.
