The Future Labour Market 7.5 credits

About the course

This course introduces students to the labour market and its evolving nature. It examines how technological, social, and demographic changes have shaped the labour market in the past and how they may influence its future development. The course begins by exploring how the introduction of new technologies such as automation and artificial intelligence has affected employment relations and the meaning of work, including task composition and forms of employment. It then discusses how social changes and demographic trends influence labour market outcomes. Finally, the course analyses the role of labour market institutions (e.g., labour unions and tax-transfer systems) in this changing environment and evaluates the economic, social, and ethical implications of these developments.

Topics covered include the impacts of automation, artificial intelligence, and skill-biased technological change on the labour market; the role of the internet, remote work, and the gig economy in shaping employment relations; changes in female labour force participation; the effects of population ageing and migration on future labour markets; and the implications of technological change for taxation, labour unions, and transfer systems.
