The aim of this course is to allow students to gain in-depth knowledge in the field of health promotion and to develop their skills in planning, implementing and evaluating initiatives to improve population health and/or reduce health inequalities. The course encompass theories, concepts and methods that are central in the field of health promotion while applying them with a basis in current research and a focus on individual, organizational and structural perspectives.

Expected learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
After completing the course, students shall be able to:
  • Describe and discuss key concepts and perspectives in the field of health promotion.
  • Identify and clarify the importance of different actors and arenas in health promotion practice.
  • Explain and reflect on theories, models and methods useful in planning, implementing and evaluating health promotion initiatives.
Skills and abilities
After completing the course, students shall be able to:
  • Analyse and assess the need for health promotion activities.
  • Develop and plan health promoting projects.
  • Apply relevant theories and methods as a basis for planning, implementing and evaluating health promotion initiatives.
Judgement and approach
After completing the course, students shall be able to: 
  • Critically discuss and evaluate efforts in health promotion from individual, organizational and structural perspectives with a focus on ethical, societal and scientific dimensions.

Required Knowledge

For non-programme students applying as freestanding course students, the requirements are 120 ECTS, of which a minimum of 30 ECTS are within one of the following: health sciences, environmental health or social sciences. English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 from Swedish Upper secondary education.

Form of instruction

Teaching in the course is concentrated to two weeks during the course period. Teaching is performed through lectures, group work, seminars, and home assignments. All teaching will be in English.

Examination modes

The course is examined individually through active participation in compulsory seminars/group work and a written home assignment. The compulsory seminars/group work can be awarded G (Pass) and U (Fail), while the written exam is awarded with the grades VG (Pass with Distinction), G (Pass) and U (Fail). The overall grades for the course are VG, G and U. In order to be awarded Pass for the entire course, all examination parts need to be Passed. To be awarded with Pass with Distinction, it is required that the the written home assignment is awarded Pass with Distinction. Students that do not receive a passing grade on the written home examination will be required to revise their exam according to comments provided by the examiner and re-submit their work for a second assessment within the time-line determined by the examiner. After revising their home exam, the student can only obtain the grades Pass or Fail, but not Pass with Distinction.
If there are special reasons, the examiner has the right to decide whether another form of examination can be used. It is only allowed to supplement a failing grade to a pass. Supplementation to achieve a higher grade is not allowed. A student who has failed two tests for a course, is entitled to have another examiner appointed, unless there are specific reasons against it. A written request should be submitted to the director of studies.

Deviations for the course syllabus' examination may be made for a student who has been subject to a decision granting pedagogical support due to a disability. Individual adaption of the examination form shall be considered based on the student's needs. The form of examination is adapted within the framework of the expected study results of the course syllabus. At the student's request, the course coordinator shall promptly decide, in consultation with the examiner, on the appropriate form of examination. The decision shall then be communicated to the student.
