From Vikings to Welfare: An Introduction to the Archaeology and History of Sweden and the Nordic Countries 30 credits
About the course
This course is designed for those who want an overview of Swedish and Nordic archaeology, history, religious history, and the history of ideas. The course consists of four modules, through which you will learn about ways of life and living environments in ancient Scandinavia, as well as Nordic history, with a focus on key milestones and the social, political, and economic developments of the Nordic countries. You will also study Sweden’s intellectual history, gaining insight into the role of science and technology in societal development from the twentieth century to the present day , as well as Nordic religious history, including Old Norse and Sámi religion.
The course consists of four modules, each of which can also be taken separately.
Please note that these modules may be offered in a different order depending on the semester.
Module 1: Ancient Scandinavia (7.5 credits)
Module 2: History of the Nordic countries (7.5 credits)
Module 3: Twentieth Century Swedish Intellectual History (7,5 credits)
Module 4: Sami and Old Norse Religion/Nordic religions (7,5 credits)
