Academic calendar

The academic calendar at Umeå University is divided into two terms (semesters), each lasting 20 weeks. The autumn term typically begins during the beginning of September and ends in the middle of January. The spring term begins in the middle of January and ends during the early part of June.

An Orientation for new international students is typically held the week prior to the first day of classes during the autumn term and on the first day of the Spring term.

The following holidays or the equivalent are usually free of teaching and classes.

  • 5 January (after lunch 12:00): Twelfth Night (Trettondagsafton)
  • 6 January: Epiphany (Trettondagen)
  • Easter between Maundy Thursday and Easter Monday in March or April
  • 30 April (after lunch 12:00): Walpurgis Eve (Valborgsmässafton)
  • 1 May: International Workers' Day (Första maj)
  • Ascension Day in April, May or June (Kristi himmelfärds dag)
  • 6 June: National Day of Sweden (Nationaldagen)
  • Midsummer's Eve in June (Midsommarafton)
  • The whole month of July (juli månad)
  • The day before All Saints Day (after lunch 12:00) in October or November (Dag före alla helgons dag)
  • All Saints Day in October or November (Alla helgons dag)
  • 23 December – 2 January (jul- och nyårshelgen)
  • Saturdays and Sundays (Lördagar och söndagar)
