Industrial Design, Bachelor term 3 30 credits

About the course package

The exchange term at the Bachelor Programme in Industrial Design, term 3, aims to provide students with opportunities to use knowledge and competence to continue developing their design skills, such as visualization-, form- and communication skills. The course is divided into different parts such as portfolio, theory, form, projects, material- and manufacturing etc., to give students the opportunity to improve their design process.

The work is performed both individually and in groups. In the project work, the student will develop her/his work process by doing a joint project together with an external company, organization or authority. The students work in groups, and through working in reality-based projects the students analyze and critically reflects on cooperating with people with different professional backgrounds. The theory course is conducted in Swedish, exchange students will get a separate assignment in English.

5ID163  Designprocess 2, 6.0 credits The aim of this course is for the student to learn the basic conditions for qualitative methodology; such as observation, interviews and questionnaires, and to practice using those methods to obtain information from a target group. The student will in a reflective way develop the part of her/his portfolio related to the project work and description of her/his competence, to be able to for example apply for an internship. By working with, reflecting on, and using her/his portfolio in conversation with others, the ability to reflect upon, understand and communicate design competence and knowledge will deepen.

5ID164  Design as Emotional Experience 2, 7.5 credits The aim of the course is that the student practice and deepen her/his knowledge to solve form problems in a systematic way, based on a predefined goal. The course is conducted through practical work in a design project based on a simple form analysis of an existing product and brand. The form is reworked with 2-dimensional sketches and drawings to be followed by development into a 3-dimensional design suggestion with a physical scale model in clay. The student shall, based on an analysis and reflection, communicate form both verbally and in writing.

5ID165 Design and Theoretical Subjects 2, 4.5 credits In the course, the student will become acquainted with the body's anatomy and muscle structure, as well as physical conditions in work, the body's limitations and the cognitive conditions of a human in the designing of products and services. The student is introduced to basic text based argumentation analysis as a method of communicating and presenting design proposals.

5ID167 Design, Production and New Technology 2, 6.0 credits In this course the insight regarding conditions and consequences for production of products deepens. This happens through reasoning around sustainability in different ways when it comes to production aspects, such as environmental-, economical- and social sustainability. Through reflection, the student will deepen her/his understanding of the design area's possibilities and limitations from a production and sustainability perspective. The course also includes a section in which new technologies, new production methods and materials are tested and discussed.

5ID214 Hot Team, 6.0 credits The aim of the course is that the student should deepen her/his knowledge and competence to work on contemporary issues in design projects. The course includes elements to work in teams, to identify a professional role, as well as to deepen their skills to work with complex design problems with the user in the centre. The student is given the opportunity to partly independently deepen her/his ability to work methodically with design-related problems in a real life perspective. The student will collaborate in groups, and with external actors from business, state and/or the municipality. Supervision is done by industrial designers and/or comparable disciplines.
