Contents
This course deals with gendered violence as a theoretical, human rights and policy issue. Taking departure from a variety of feminist and intersectional approaches the course will address questions such as: What is violence? How can violence be gendered? What are the relationships between violence, gender and power? How can gender-based violence be understood, addressed and responded to? How are notions of gender equality and violence linked?

Expected learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student shall have the ability to:
Knowledge and understanding: 

  • understand and explain different definitions of gendered violence. 
  • understand and explain gendered violence from critical feminist perspectives.

Skills and abilities: 

  • independently apply relevant critical theories on empirical or theoretical problems related to gender and violence. 
  • demonstrate the ability to identify the personal need for further knowledge and to take responsibility for the personal competence development.  

Judgement and approach:

  • independently identify and formulate relevant questions regarding gendered violence feminist perspectives.
  • be able to, orally and in writing, present an independent analysis related to central questions regarding gendered violence. 

Required Knowledge

A minimum of 90 university credits in one main field including an individual essay carrying at least 15 university credits. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English A/5.

Form of instruction

The course is a full-time on-line course in English. The course is taught entirely through an electronic Learning Management System where the student takes part in lectures, mandatory assignments and other learning activities. The studies are characterized by a high degree of independent and active search for knowledge, and critical reflection, both individually and in groups.

Examination modes

Examination takes place through fulfillment of two parts:
1) Mandatory assignments during the course
2) Individual written assignment.
 
For part 1 the grades are Fail (U) or Pass (G). For part 2, as well as for the whole course, the grades are Fail (U), Pass (G) and Pass with Distinction (VG). The grade for the whole course in based on the examination of part 2. The whole course is not graded until part 1 is fulfilled.
