Geodatabase Design, 7.5 credits
Contents
The purpose of the course is to further develop knowledge and skills related to central GIS tasks: collection, management and updating of spatial data. Using ESRI:s geodatabase format as platform, the course addresses different GIS and CAD formats, metadata, coordinate systems/projections, the query language SQL as well as topological relations and rules.
Expected learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student should be able to:

(1) Describe functionality, applications and limitations associated with common GIS and CAD formats that can be stored in a geodatabase,
(2) explain central concepts in GIS database management,

(3) prepare, troubleshoot and document spatial information for storage in a geodatabase,
(4) create and administer properly designed geodatabases,
(5) implement and apply topological relations and rules in order to accurately mo
Required Knowledge
Univ: 120 ECTS, 60 ECTS of which in a major field of subject, including 15 ECTS in Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English A (IELTS (Academic) with a minimum overall score of 5.5 and no individual score below 5.0. TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test) with a minimum total score of 530 and a minimum TWE score of 4. TOEFL IBT (Internet-based Test) with a minimum total score of 72 and a minimum score of 17 on the Writing Section).
Form of instruction
Instruction is given through lectures, exercises, and seminars, where students are expected to participate actively. Relevant gender issues related to the contents are continuously integrated in the course. The course is given in English.
Examination modes
Examination modes
The course is examined by written assignments to be presented orally at seminars and in written reports. The final grade is based on the individual’s performance in the examination. In order to have the possibility to receive the grades A and B course assignments need to be delivered as scheduled
Examination based on the same syllabus as at the ordinary examination is guaranteed during two years after the first registration to the course.
Students who have passed an examination cannot redo the examination to receive a higher grade.
It is not possible to appeal against a received grade, i.e. to get it examined by a higher authority, but a student can always criticize the grading or ask another examiner to reconsider the examination.
When a student has failed an examination on two occasions, he or she has a right to have another grading teacher. A written request for an alternative examiner should be handed to the director of studies.
ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER
Credit transfer is always examined individually.
