Applied Cartography, 7.5 credits
Contents
The focus of the course is applied, advanced cartography. This entails in-depth understanding of fonts, colour and symbols, as well as corresponding practical applications in GIS in terms of labelling techniques, colour choice and symbolization. Theoretical and critical views of GIS as a tool, as well as maps as conveyors of information, are also given attention. Furthermore, the course provides an introduction to the post-processing of maps in raster and vector graphics software (Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, respectively).
Expected learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
(1) Explain how fonts, colours and symbols are used in maps to convey information,
Competence and skills
(2) select and customize labels, colours and symbols based on the purpose and target audience of the map,
(3) utilize graphics software for post-processing of map content and design,
(4) design map layouts whose appearance and content are well suited to their purpose, and
Judgement and approach
(5) assess and relate to maps in terms of their function as conveyors of information.
Required Knowledge
Univ: 120 ECTS, 60 ECTS of which in a major field of subject, including 15 ECTS in Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6
Form of instruction
The course consists of lectures and exercises. The exercises - partly carried out under teacher supervision - constitutes an essential part of the course. The software used in the course are the GIS programs ArcGIS Desktop and QGIS and the graphics editors Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. The course is taught in English.
