GIS for Transportation, 7.5 credits
Contents
In addition to basic geographic perspectives on accessibility and transportation, topics covered in the course include GIS-based visualization of transport networks and flows, network data set construction and different methods for network analysis of relevance for transport planning.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
(1) describe and discuss the role of transport and mobility in different sectors of society,
(2) account for the supply of GIS tools for network analysis,
(3) identify which types of spatial problems that can be solved using network analysis in a GIS,
Competence and skills
(4) put theories and concepts of transport geography into practice by means of network analysis in a GIS,
(5) create, manage and troubleshoot multimodal network datasets with travel impedances and restriction attributes in a geodatabase,
(6) identify an appropriate GIS workflow for analysing transport flows between demand point locations and supply facilities, and
Judgement and approach
(7) apply a critical approach in relating their studies to scientific literature.
Required Knowledge
Univ: 120 ECTS, 60 ECTS of which in a major field of subject, including 15 ECTS in Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6
Form of instruction
Instruction is given through lectures, exercises, and seminars, where students are expected to participate actively. Relevant gender issues related to the contents are continuously integrated in the course. The course is given in English.
Examination modes
Examination modes
The course is examined by written assignments to be presented orally at seminars and in written reports. The final grade is based on the individual’s performance in the examination. In order to have the possibility to receive the grades A and B course assignments need to be delivered as scheduled
Examination based on the same syllabus as at the ordinary examination is guaranteed during two years after the first registration to the course.
Students who have passed an examination cannot redo the examination to receive a higher grade.
It is not possible to appeal against a received grade, i.e. to get it examined by a higher authority, but a student can always criticize the grading or ask another examiner to reconsider the examination.
When a student has failed an examination on two occasions, he or she has a right to have another grading teacher. A written request for an alternative examiner should be handed to the director of studies.

Credit transfer is always examined individually.
