The course deals with 3D-visualization of terrain using different elevation data sources, as well as how to represent the built environment in 3D; in the latter case, CAD constitutes an element. Relevant analysis techniques, such as visibility analysis to evaluate the effects of existing and planned buildings, are also covered in the course.
Expected learning outcomes
After completing the course the student should be able to: Knowledge and understanding (1) Understand how GIS can be used to visualize different kinds of georeferenced data in 3D, Competence and skills (2) create and modify geographical objects with height information, (3) visualize and analyse consequences of current situation and changes in terrain as well as the built environment, and Judgement and approach (4) evaluate and relate to information created using 3D analysis.
Required Knowledge
Univ: 120 ECTS, 60 ECTS of which in a major field of subject, including 15 ECTS in Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6
Form of instruction
The course consists of lectures and exercises. The exercises - partly carried out under teacher supervision - constitutes an essential part of the course.
The software used in the course are the GIS program ArcGIS Desktop and its extension 3D Analyst, as well as the CAD program AutoCAD Map 3D.
The course is taught in English.
Examination modes
Examination is based on individual written/graphical and oral accounts of exercises.
Grades cannot be appealed, i.e., re-evaluated by a higher authority, but the student may make comments on the grading or request that the examiner reconsider the decision. A student who has taken two examinations in a course or a part of a course without obtaining a passing grade is entitled to have another examiner appointed, unless there are special reasons to the contrary (6 Chap. 22 § Higher Education Ordinance). The student may submit a request for a different examiner to the Director of Studies.
Decisions about academic credit transfer are made on an individual basis.
