Contents

The aim of the course is that the students will acquire basic knowledge in social and emotional development of children. The focus of the course will mainly be on development from infancy to adolescence from different perspectives. Basic issues surrounding development like the impact of the gene-environment interaction on development will be taken up. The course further covers different research perspectives and study methods within the field of social and emotional development. Current research results form a central part of the course content. Application of theoretical concepts to practical situations will be presented and practiced.

Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course, students should be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
* Demonstrate knowledge and understanding about basic developmental psychology theories and their scientific basis within social and emotional domains of development
* Demonstrate knowledge and understanding about research methods used within the domains of social and emotional development.

Skills and abilities
* Demonstrate ability to compare how different theoretical perspectives differ from one another
* Demonstrate ability to discuss the interaction between genes and environment in social and emotional development
* Demonstrate ability to apply key concepts in social and emotional development to case descriptions

Evaluation ability and approach
* Demonstrate ability to evaluate social and emotional development using critical perspectives

Form of instruction

The course is conducted on campus and teaching methods consist of teacher-supervised lectures and student active seminars/group exercises. Teaching can occur digitally. The learning platform Canvas is used to distribute information and seminar tasks. The right to receive teaching and supervision applies only during the time the course, for which the student is registered to, is ongoing. The course is given in English

Examination modes

The learning outcomes will be examined through a written individual examination and through examining seminars. Examinations could be conducted digitally. Reexams will include similar assignments within two months after the first exam Presence of examining elements should be indicated in the schedule. All existing teaching within the course can be examined. Decisions on any deviations from the current form of assessment will be made by the relevant director of studies.

The grade for the course will be assigned when the written test and all mandatory parts are approved. The possible grades are 'Pass' or 'Fail'. Students are entitled to rewrite the same examination five times. Students who do not pass the regular examination should be provided an opportunity for further examination according to the University's "Regulations for tests and examinations at the undergraduate and graduate levels". A student who has failed two tests for a course or a part of a course, is entitled to have another examiner appointed, unless there are specific reasons against it (HF 6 Chap. 22 §). Requests for new examiners are made to the head of the department of Psychology. Students have the right to be tested on the same curriculum as the regular examination at least two occasions up to two years after the first registration.

Deviations from the examination forms stated in the curriculum can be made for students who have been approved special pedagogical aids due to functional impairments. Individual changes in the examination form should be evaluated based on the student's requirements. The examination form should be modified within the scope of the expected learning outcomes for the course. On the student's request, the course leader, in consultation with the examinator, shall take a quick decision on the modified examination form. The student shall then be notified of the decision.
