Contents

The course examines the concept of structural systems. Students will explore structural systems through examples and their impact on architecture. The course consists of both theoretical elements and application in tutored project work.

Expected learning outcomes

Having completed the course the student should be able to:
- Explain the meaning of structural systems
- Describe structural systems, which have made an imprint on architectural development
- Reflect on constructive methods in an architectural context.
- Translate material and technique into architectural concepts in terms of body, space and object

Required Knowledge

Admission to the course requires that all preceding courses of the Architectural Programme (TYARK) are completed and approved.

Form of instruction

The teaching consists of project work and is conducted individually and in groups. The forms of teaching can be practical exercises, individual tutoring, group discussions and critiques as well as lectures, seminars, field studies, workshops and study visits.

Examination modes

Examination is through both oral, written and practical assignments, individually and in groups. During the course the different moments are assessed continuously through exercises and mandatory assignments of tentative nature.

The grades Pass (G) and Fail (U) are used. To pass the course, all examinations and mandatory
modules need to be completed and assigned a pass grade. The grade is a summary assessment of the results of the examinations of the different modules. To pass requires attendance at the instructor-led teaching that is of tentative nature and a Pass grade on the oral and written presentation of a group assignment and an approved written examination.
Further examinations will be arranged for students who did not pass the regular examination. A student who has failed two consecutive examinations has the right to get another examiner, unless specific reasons arise (HF Ch. 6 § 22). Requests for another examiner are submitted to the head of department at Umeå School of Architecture.

Transfer of Credits
Students have the right to request that previous studies, or equivalent knowledge and skills
acquired in a professional, work-related capacity, be validated and transferred into credits on an equivalent course or programme at Umeå University. Applications for credit transfer should be addressed to Student Services/Degree Evaluation Office. More information can be found at the Umeå University student web site (www.student.umu.se/english) and in Chapter 6 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Appeals may be made to the Higher Education Appeals Board (Överklagandenämnden för högskolan) against a decision by the university not to approve an application for credit transfer (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 12), even in cases where only a part of the application has been rejected.
