Expected learning outcomes

After completing the course students will be able to:

  • demonstrate how to work with a global vehicle project.
  • demonstrate how to work with a customer, industry or institution, from market research, through packing, ergonomics and conceptualisation to presentation.
  • describe the challenges that can occur when working in multidisciplinary teams.
  • conduct a professional presentation of all phases of a project, including the final manual or computer-based accounts of design proposals.

Required Knowledge

A Bachelor's degree or equivalent first-cycle qualification comprising of at least 180 ECTS or a corresponding qualification from an internationally recognized university. Specific entry requirements are: 60 ECTS credits in the field of Design. Student must have passed all previous master courses on the Transportation Design Programme at Umeå Institute of Design or the equivalent. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6.

Form of instruction

The project work is conducted through hands-on training led by instructors. Skilled professional designers and teachers from Umeå Institute of Design work as supervisors.
The course parts in ergonomics, design methods and presentation techniques are taught through lectures, demonstrations and exercises. Guest lecturers from other departments within the Umeå University participate in teaching. Personal study means self-study. All course elements are compulsory.

Examination modes

The examination is based on oral, written and visual presentations of project results. Results are presented for both the project supervisors and representatives of the participating companies or institutions. Ergonomics parts are assessed by a written test. Design methods and presentation techniques are assessed by means of written report of assigned tasks. Where studies have been conducted outside the institution, i.e. at a company,  the company leaves a certificate of conducted studies to supervisor. Examination is then taken by the examiner with this certificate as a basis.
To pass the course, students must complete all exercises and mandatory assignments, all of which must be passed. The rating Fail (U) or Pass (G) provides a summary of the results of the various elements of the course and given when all components are approved.

Students who do not pass the regular examination can take additional examinations. A student who has failed two tests for a course or part of a class, are entitled to have another examiner appointed, unless there are special reasons to the contrary (HF Chapter 6. § 22). The request for a new examiner shall be made in writing to the Head of Department at Umeå Institute of Design.

ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER
Students have the right to request that previous studies, or equivalent knowledge and skills acquired in a professional, work-related capacity, be validated and transferred into credits on an equivalent course or programme at Umeå University.  Applications for credit transfer should be addressed to Student Services/Degree Evaluation Office. More information can be found at the Umeå University student web site (www.student.umu.se/english) and in Chapter 6 of the Higher Education Ordinance.  Appeals may be made to the Higher Education Appeals Board (ÖNH) against a decision by the university not to approve an application for credit transfer (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 12), even in cases where only a part of the application has been rejected.
