This course provides an introduction to the Institute of Design with workshops, computers and communications networks. It further provides an introduction to the topic of transportation design.
Initial projects 1.5 credits. This part contains of a task to be solved individually and in groups. Students from all masters work together.
Basic skills 1.5 credits. This introduces the techniques and safety precautions for the workshop work. It introduces further computers and communications networks as well as standard programs like, PageMaker, Illustrator and Photoshop.
Sketch Techniques and form 4.5 credits. The part is practicing the ability to use sketching techniques as a tool, and form studies to further develop the ability to see and control the shape characteristics and properties. During this part a number of design tasks are carried out.
Expected learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to:
account for equipment, personnel and activities in the workshops.
use machinery and equipment without supervision and have thorough knowledge of all safety precautions.
use computer equipment at Umeå Institute of Design.
work with different sketching techniques and form studies.
A Bachelor's degree or equivalent first-cycle qualification comprising of at least 180 ECTS or a corresponding qualification from an internationally recognized university. Specific entry requirements are: 60 ECTS credits in the field of Design. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6.
Form of instruction
Teaching is conducted through lectures, field trips, guided exercises and literature studies. If possible situated in some parts of the course with companies and institutions, having resources that are suitable for practical learning in the specific areas.
Students are assessed by means of written and oral presentations. Skills in projects and practical engineering work is also examined. To pass the course all the course parts and tasks of the course must be passed. For each task and element as well as for the whole course, the grades Pass (G) or Fail (U).
For students who have not obtained the grade Pass, other examination sessions will be arranged. A student who for two consecutive examinations for the same course or sub-course has not been passed, has the right to have another examiner appointed, if there are no special reasons against this (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 6, 22 §). The request for a new examiner shall be made in writing to the Head of Department at Umeå Institute of Design.
ACADEMIC CREDIT TRANSFER Students have the right to request that previous studies, or equivalent knowledge and skills acquired in a professional, work-related capacity, be validated and transferred into credits on an equivalent course or programme at Umeå University. Applications for credit transfer should be addressed to Student Services/Degree Evaluation Office. More information can be found at the Umeå University student web site (www.student.umu.se/english) and in Chapter 6 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Appeals may be made to the Higher Education Appeals Board (ÖNH) against a decision by the university not to approve an application for credit transfer (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 12), even in cases where only a part of the application has been rejected.
